NavXp is a DotNetNuke component that handles navigation. It was designed for multiple purposes. In a simple scenario it renders exactly the hierarchy of pages you have in your portal. At this point you can select from a wide range of skins or themes to reflect your vision. You can take one step further and bring your ideas into action by creating your own themes using NavXp Theme Editor. The simplest way to do this is to locate the skin and theme that are closest to what you envision, then Edit Theme as New and adjust properties accordingly.

If the customization you need exceeds the pre-built skins we've included in the package, you can create your own skin. This is a fully documented process. For more information on this topic, start from this tutorial on creating a simple skin then take on more advanced topics such as allowing theming for your skin or displaying icons.

In more advanced scenarios, NavXp can render a custom hierarchy you define with drag and drop operations from pages in your portal; the hierarchy itself can be different for various roles. You can read more about this in Profiles. In the simple scenario above, the hierarchy that is identical to the DNN page hierarchy is called default profile.

Note that we described NavXp as a DNN component. This is because NavXp can be used either as a module or as a skin object. More information about using NavXp as a skin object can be found in this tutorial.
